Child resistant packaging

For safety reasons, more products have to be packed in child-resistant packaging.
Such packages are subjected to certification tests.
The purpose of such packaging is that young children cannot not reach the content of it, but that the adults are still capable to open those.

  • ISO 8317: Requirements and testing procedures for reclosable packages

The tests are performed by qualified supervisors, on packaging filled with water, sand or placebos.
10 Children will participate in a test per test location, in groups of two children, age between 42 and 51 months and this during a total period of 10 minutes.
The aim of this test is that children do not open those new packaging.
The tests are then conducted with seniors, age group between 50 and 70 years.
At least 90% of the participants should be able to open and properly reclose the package.

The comparative mechanical test method according to the ISO 13127 is to compare if a packaging with a minor change can still be considered as equivalent, this compared to the original tested combination (test with children and adults = panel test).
This test procedure can reduce in some cases the panel test and the sole objective is to have more child resistant packaging on the market, this at a reduced cost.

    How to deliver your samples:

The acceptance form annexed to our price offer with a reference number will be returned duly filled in and signed for agreement before starting the tests.
This reference number will be kept for the requested documentation, delivered samples and all mail traffic.
You can find the requested number of test samples as well as the documentation needed to realize the test as well as the redaction of the test report with its certificate in our price offer.

    What you may expect:

After having runned the tests, duration between 6 and 8 weeks, outside school vacation, you will receive a detailed test report with an appropriated test certificate in case of positive test results.
If you have any questions regarding Child Resistant Packaging, you can contact our institute, the only recognized test laboratory in Belgium to perform those tests.

  • EN 862: Requirements and testing procedures for non-reclosable packages for non-pharmaceutical products

This standard is applicable for individual non-reclosable packages, single use, this for
    non-pharmaceutical products.
If this packaging is available for the consumer but there are no tools sold together with the packaging at the point of sale, the following tests are to be carried out:
10 children are tested per test location with a minimum of 3 places, age between 42 and 51 months and this during a unique period of 5 minutes.
There is no demonstration of how to open the packaging after this period.
The aim of this test is that children do not open those new packaging.

The test procedure with the adults is optional.
When there should be a doubt, those tests can also be carried out.

  • EN 14375: Child-resistant non-reclosable packaging for pharmaceutical products

Packaging for small quantities of pharmaceutical products that are individually wrapped in non-reclosable packaging.
10 Children will participate in a test per test location, in groups of two children, age between 42 and 51 months and this during a period of 10 minutes.
Children may not gain access to more than 8 units.

Those tests are then conducted with seniors, age group between 50 and 70 years.

  • EN 13127: Mechanical test procedures for reclosable packaging

This standard does not replace the ISO 8317 standard but is a substitute to this one.
The comparative mechanical test method is to compare if a new packaging with a minor change can still be considered as equivalent, this compared to the original tested combination (test with children and adults = panel test).

A 5% tolerance is allowed when comparing the measurements.
If the results fall outside the tolerances we will adopt one of the following situations:
    • Closing strength is lower, then the testing has to be repeated with the children, this to determinate that the children still do not open the packaging,
    • Closing strength is higher, then the testing has to be repeated with the adult to verify if they can still open and properly reclose the packaging
This test procedure can reduce in some cases the panel test and the sole objective is to have more child resistant packaging on the market this at a reduced cost.

  • US 16 CFR § 1700.20 Child resistant & senior use effectiveness

If you want to export your products to the US, the tests have to be runned following the US Protocol.

Tests are conducted with minimum 50 children on 5 different locations.
Tests are also carried out with the seniors, age group between 50 and 70 years.
